| About Iguana
Labs
Iguana Labs began in 1995. We saw a need
for a low cost programmer for 8051 based microcontrollers and created the
PG302,
our first product. It programs 20 pin versions of the 8051. We soon added
the ADT87 for programming
the more standard 40 pin versions of the 8051.
Our line of low cost electronic kits began soon
after we opened. We decided to use our web site to give away the instructions
for the kits for free in the form of electronics tutorials. The tutorials
and the kits have gone through many revisions and improvements over the
years. Our largest kit, introduced in 2001, is the microcontroller
beginner kit. It includes everything needed for a beginner to start
from not knowing anything about electronics and progress up through using
microcontrollers to make their own custom projects.
Since 1990 we have been working with 8051 based
microcontrollers and we have found the Atmel
(http://www.atmel.com) line of chips to be the easiest to work with.
They were one of the first to make versions of the 8051 with electrically
erasable (Flash) memory rather than ultra violet erasable memory (usually
called EPROM). EPROM versions require a UV light source to erase the memory
and erasing the memory can take 5 to 15 minutes compared to the Flash memory
that can be erased and reprogrammed in one step with the erasing taking
less than a second.
In 1997 Atmel released a new line of microcontrollers
called AVRs. They are fast and most incorporate a non volatile data memory
space. We were quite impressed by these chips so the PG302 was modified
so it can program the major chips from the AVR family.
We believe in accurately representing the price
of our products. We do not make any money on shipping. The price you see
is the price you pay. For US orders, all of our products can be shipped
for free through the US Postal Service (either First Class or Priority
Mail, depending on the weight). For FedEx and UPS options, you only pay
the price that we pay (and often you pay a little less than our actual
cost for FedEx and UPS). We do not artificially increase these prices
to make money on shipping.
More about the PG302...
We decided to keep the cost as low as possible
by avoiding some common but unnecessary costly options.
There is no case. The PG302 has built
in legs so it can stand on its own.
The PG302 only programs microcontrollers. Most
device programmers have developed from EPROM programmers (a memory only
chip). The option for programming microcontrollers is an add-on to these
units so you are paying for more than you need.
Direct Sells. We make the PG302 and sell it directly
to our customers so there is no additional markup by resellers.
The PG302 hardware is a mature product now in it's
9th year of production. Many modifications have been made over the
years to increase the quality and lower the cost.
